The water content is one of the most important quality criteria for honey. The digital honey refractometer from PCE Instruments has been specially designed to precisely determine the quality of honey within seconds. The honey refractometer is used for the exact determination of sugar and water content in honey. This way the beekeeper can make sure that his product is not watered down. Excessive water content in honey could lead to fermentation, affecting the shelf life, consistency and taste of the natural product. The honey refractometer is a measuring device based on the determination of the refractive index of a liquid.

With the support of the honey refractometer, the beekeeper can measure the concentration of water and sugar even with a small amount of sample. It is sufficient to drip a few drops of honey into the stainless steel well of the meter to obtain a meaningful result. A prism is enclosed in the sample well, and the concentration of sugar and water in the honey is measured in this way by means of light refraction. The integrated light source in the digital honey refractometer prevents measurement errors that are quickly triggered by artificial light such as fluorescent lamps in an analog honey refractometer.

The measurement result is displayed quickly and precisely on the large, easy-to-read LC display of the honey refractometer after automatic temperature compensation (10 to 40 °C). The user of the beekeeper’s refractometer can choose between various common measurement parameters: Brix (0 to 90.00%), water (5.00 to 38.00%), Bé (33.00 to 48.00) or refractive index (1.3330 to 1.5177 nD). In addition, the display provides information about the measured honey temperature thanks to an integrated temperature indicator. The glass prism of the beekeeper’s refractometer, enclosed in the stainless steel recess, can be easily and quickly cleaned before and after measurement and is closed with a plastic prism cover. The manufacturer has designed the honey refractometer to protect the glass prism from damage. Convenient three-button operation guarantees user-friendly handling and virtually eliminates the possibility of operating the honey refractometer incorrectly. To save the battery of the meter, the manufacturer has equipped the honey refractometer with an automatic switch-off function. When not in use, the honey refractometer switches off automatically after one minute. If necessary, the user can calibrate the refractometer for beekeepers himself at any time by adding a few drops of distilled water to the measuring well and pressing a button to start the calibration.
