The digital wine refractometer from PCE Instruments has been specially developed to determine the degree of ripeness of grapes in viticulture. The wine refractometer is used for the precise determination of the sugar content in the must. In this way, the winemaker can effectively determine the potential alcohol content of the wine later obtained from the grapes. This is because the more ripe a grape is, the more sugar it usually contains. This sugar is converted into alcohol during the winemaking process. The wine refractometer is an instrument based on measuring the refractive index of a liquid.

With the help of the wine refractometer, the user can measure the concentration of sugar in the grape must even with a small sample amount. It is sufficient to drip a few drops of the grape must into the stainless steel well of the meter to obtain a meaningful result. A prism is enclosed in the sample well, and the sugar concentration in the must is measured in this way by means of light refraction. On average, approx. 16.5 g of sugar correspond to 1 % alcohol. The integrated light source in the digital wine refractometer prevents measurement errors that are quickly caused by artificial light such as fluorescent lamps in an analog wine refractometer.

After automatic temperature compensation (10...40 °C), the measurement result is displayed quickly and precisely on the wine refractometer’s large, easy-to-read LC display. The user of the wine refractometer can choose between different, common measuring units: Brix (0 to 45.00 %), Oechsle (3 to 150), KMW (0 to 25.00) or alcohol content (0 to 22.00 %). In addition, thanks to an integrated temperature display, the display provides information about the measured temperature of the liquid. The glass prism of the wine refractometer, which is enclosed in the stainless steel recess, can be cleaned easily and quickly before and after the measurement and is closed with a plastic prism cover. The manufacturer has designed the wine refractometer to protect the glass prism from damage. The convenient three-button operation guarantees user-friendly handling and virtually eliminates the possibility of operating the wine refractometer incorrectly. To save the battery of the meter, the manufacturer has equipped the wine refractometer with an automatic switch-off function. When not in use, the wine refractometer switches off automatically after one minute.

If necessary, the user can calibrate the wine refractometer himself at any time by adding a few drops of distilled water to the measuring well and triggering the calibration by pressing a button.
