Sd (m): strat de aer echivalent, deoarece indică mărimea stratului de aer ce ar opune o rezistență egală cu cea pe care o opune produsul sau structura respectivă, la trecerea vaporilor (prin împrăștiere). Un alt parametru ce descrie capacitatea de împrăștiere a vaporilor de apă a produselor este permeabilitatea la vaporii de apă ce poate fi exprimată în US perm, μg/Ns și g/m224h. Clasificarea membranelor nu este reglementată de un standard univoc, ci este stabilită de diferite standarde naționale, în mod diferit în funcție de valoarea Sd a acestora.
