MANUFACTURING PROCESS FOR SOCKETS 1 Blank cropped to size from 31CrV3 2 3 Hot forged in the forging press. Accurately cropped to size. 3 4 Outside diameter turned and knurled. For this step and the next, GEDORE uses high-tech machinery from its in-house mechanical engineering department. 7 Hardened under protective gas atmosphere, followed by annealing. 5 6 8 9 Degreased, since grease would destroy the protective gas atmosphere in hardening. Counterbored, square socket drive is fluted (ball-stop flute), manufacturer and socket size are permanently stamped. Sand blasted in preparation for surface coating. Nickel-plated and matt-chromeplated to prevent dazzle. The electrolytically applied nickel coating ensures corrosion protection. The electroplated chrome improves the look and gives the socket a perfect finish. The fibres run in parallel with the contour of the tool. The uninterrupted fibre orientation prevents residual stresses in the structure. In cold-forged tools, the fibres or lines of stress may deviate. Fibre orientation is equally important in nature. UNIT-DRIVE PROFIL For example, in a tree, the soft fibre orientation is parallel to the branch, so the wood is resistant to bending and twisting. If fibres become kinked, the branch loses its stability at the kink point and breaks. The low-stress GEDORE sockets withstand suddenly occurring peak forces better than cold formed sockets.
