FUNCTION OF A HEAT PUMP Use heat from the air or ground for the heating and hot water supply of buildings - as well as for cooling in the summer. The heat pump reduces energy costs and protects the environment The heat pump differs considerably from conventional heating systems, which generate heat energy by burning oil, gas or solid fuels. The heat pump uses solar heat from the air or heat from the ground as an energy source. Although the heat pump requires electricity for the treatment of environmental heat, this only accounts for a small part of the total energy input. REMKO heat pumps manage to generate 100% thermal energy with only about 25% electrical energy and 75% environmental energy. Using a photovoltaic system, the energy costs can be further reduced. When 100% green electricity is used, CO2 emissions can be reduced to zero. In practice, the ratio of the drive energy to the heat produced is expressed in terms of the annual coefficient of performance – COP. The annual coefficient of performance (COP) describes the relationship between the heat provided and the electrical energy supplied. The higher the COP, the more efficient the heat pump works. In addition to the efficiency of the heat pump, a small temperature difference between heat source and flow temperature of the heating system is decisive for good efficiency. To reduce the flow temperature, the following measures are suitable: ■ A heat distribution system: underfloor or wall heating has a lower flow temperature than conventional heating elements. ■ The energetic standard of the house: a well-insulated house usually requires a lower heating flow temperature. Function of the heat pump In simple terms, the process by means of which a heat pump converts ambient heat to thermal energy using electricity can be compared to the principle of the refrigerator. Only it works in reverse here. While a refrigerator removes heat from its interior and discharges it to the outside at the back of the appliance, the heat pump extracts heat from the outdoors and releases it as thermal energy back into the building. Condensing HEAT SOURCE HEAT USE Evaporation With the obtained environmental energy, a refrigerant is vaporized - this also works at freezing temperatures. In the heat pump, the refrigerant is compressed, thereby increasing the temperature. The heating circuit or the domestic water can therefore be heated to the desired temperature. The refrigerant condenses and heat is released to the heating system. The refrigerant is relieved, cools down and the cycle starts from the beginning.
