The processing of iron has a long tradition in the Stubai valley. In the area the iron mines were of such high quality that in the 14th century blacksmiths in Fulpmes were already producing hand tools. In 1897 engaged craftsmen formed a cooperative to manage the future for both production and sales. Today 26 member factories are processing several thousand tons of steel each year. The production programme consists of a wide range of tools for professional users such as metalworkers, woodworkers, woodcarvers, wood turners, forestry workers, auto mechanics, roofers, masons, tile setters, electricians and others. Our own forge manufactures products for our members and also semi-finished products for other industries in Austria and other European countries. Approximately half of the production is exported to more than 50 countries worldwide. The brand name „STUBAI“ stands for high quality and workmanship. The STUBAI TOOL INDUSTRY is the biggest hand tool manufacturer in Austria. The Tools for the Wood Turner Just as the woodcarver carefully guides the chisel to give the piece of wood a certain design, the wood turner deftly controls the turning tool to shape the rotating wood piece on the lathe. In this catalogue we want to present the programme of the STUBAI wood turning tools. The most essential turning tools are, and always will be, the gouges and chisels. With these tools the turner is able to form the most common shapes. For this reason, both tools are almost always shown as a combination on old seals and inscriptions. During the times of Renaissance and Baroque a greater variety of turning tools was developed. Various types of hooks and bent chisels were produced to turn bowls and cups. The many beautiful work pieces from former times show us that the turning tools must have been of a considerable high standard. The earliest metal tools were made of forged iron. Later iron was replaced by forged steel and today the turning tools are made of high speed steel for hard woods and high quality carbon steel for soft woods. Wood turning is an artwork and requires skill and experience. Therefore we recommend that novices take a training course to learn the basics of wood turning, the handling and sharpening of the tools, as well as the knowledge of the various types of wood. Then, equipped with this knowledge, only the right tool is missing. The advice that „only the best is good enough“ is especially true for turning.
