Non-existent ESD castors can have negative effects on the stored or transported technology, which can lead to damage and downtime. Electric conductive castors can provide effective protection against electrostatic discharge. Areas of application are e.g. electrical industry or medical technology. CASCOO. ESD CASTORS. ESD CASTORS AT A GLANCE These castors come along with a plate or bolt hole attachment and different wheel materials. WHAT IS ESD? ESD stands for Electro-Static-Discharge. These discharges are voltage breakdowns caused by large potential differences. An example of this is the electrostatic discharge when touching a car door. Here the charged voltage is discharged through the body and a minimal breakdown occurs. In most cases, these breakdowns are hardly perceptible to humans (usually only from around 3,000 volts) and are certainly not dangerous. In the production of electronic components, however, a voltage of 35 volts can be sufficient to damage this component. For this reason, protection against electrostatic discharges is becoming increasingly important in these and other manufacturing industries. HOW DO ELECTROSTATIC VOLTAGES FORM? Electrostatic voltages arise from the exchange of charges between two bodies with different voltage potentials. This can happen, for example, when two different materials rub against each other and then separate. The human eye can observe this when rubbing a balloon on clothing or when stretch foil is unwound from a product. The result is a charge exchange on the object with the lower charge, which in some cases can then result in visible sparking during the discharge. HOW CAN I PROTECT MY PRODUCTS FROM DISCHARGE? By using the appropriate materials between the product and the floor, you can prevent discharges. If I as a person come into direct contact (with my hands) or indirectly (via a transport trolley) with my product, conductive shoes or, in our area, corresponding conductive wheels and castors are recommended. These castors are made of conductive material. Different wheel rims and treads can be manufactured accordingly. This means that no voltage can arise, as it can be discharged directly into the ground. At our wheels and castors we distinguish between the antistatic area and the conductive area. Antistatic castors are assigned in the 10⁶ to 10⁹ ohmic resistance (Ω) range, electric conductive castors are assigned in the 10³ to 10⁵ ohmic resistance (Ω) range. It is therefore a matter of a lower resistance, since a correspondingly higher voltage has to be discharged. 154 155
