RUBBER AND RUBBER PRODUCTS Requirements for storage, cleaning and maintenance 1 Scope of application The following requirements apply to products made of rubber and rubber in pure and composite form (i.e. elastomers made of natural rubber and / or synthetic rubber). These requirements also apply to products made of unvulcanized rubber mixtures, adhesives and solutions with rubber. These requirements are mainly applicable to long-term storage, which is generally longer than 6 months. As long as the appearance and function of the products are not adversely affected, the requirements of this standard are also for short - term storage (less than 6 months) up to the general requirements for a storage space, e.g. such as in production and delivery plants with running material outflow - applicable. 2 General information By effect e.g. Oxygen, ozone, heat, light, moisture, solvent or storage under tension is generally known that the most of the rubber and rubber products change due to their physical properties. However, these changes can also be caused by unfavorable storage conditions and by improper handling of the products. 3 Storage The following conditions are to be applied to a storage for rubber and rubber products: it should be cool, dry, low in dust and moderately vented. Inadmissible is a weather-proof storage in the open air. 3.1 Temperature - For a proper storage of rubber and rubber products, the temperature is depending on the material to be stored and the elastomers used. For example, Rubber products must not fall below a temperature of -10° C and do not exceed +15° C when stored. The upper limit may be exceeded up to +25° C, whereby it must be taken into account that the ambient temperatures are permissible only at short notice. For rubber products of certain types of rubber (chloroprene rubber), a storage temperature of +12° C may be required, which must under no circumstances be exceeded. 3.2 Heater - Against heat sources in heated storage areas the rubber and rubber products must be a distance of 1m between the heat sources and the stored goods to shield. Storage rooms must not contain equipment such as Electric motors or other devices. The reason for this is that these facilities produce ozone and can generate sparks or other electrical discharges due to their function. It is also important to remove combustion gases and vapors which can lead to ozone formation through photochemical processes. 3.6 Other - Under no circumstances can products such as solvents, fuels, lubricants, chemicals, acids, disinfectants and the like be stored in storage rooms for rubber and rubber products. 4 Storage and handling Since stresses can promote a permanent deformation as well as a crack formation, care must be taken in particular that the rubber and rubber products are without subjected to tensile, compressive or other deformations, i.e. unstressed be stored. Rubber and rubber products must not be in contact with metals such as Copper and manganese, since these metals have a damaging effect on the rubber and rubber products. Therefore the products must be protected. This can be done by packing or by finishing with a Layer of a suitable substance, e.g. antistatic films or bags of paper, polyethylene or polyamides (nylon). Particularly in the case of rubber products with different colors or in the case of products with different composition, mutual contact must be avoided. Should new products be added to a warehouse, these should be stored separately from the ones already available. It would be beneficial if the storage time was as short as possible. 4.1 Storage of other rubber articles - If plates and strips flat stored, they must with their all entire surface lay on. However they can also stored as rolls. Rubberized fabrics must be suspended in rolls. It is also important to ensure that cables and cords are to be stored in roll collars (but not stacked on each other) or suspended or stored on rollers or coiler. Hoses must be stored in roll bunds or in a long-stretched manner. The storage of seals, buffers, rubber-metal connections has been made in such a way that deformation is excluded. Particular attention is to be paid to cellular articles. Rubber products for food are to be stored in odorless rooms. 4.2 Storage of rubber solutions and adhesives - Rubber solutions and adhesives must be stored in sealed containers and in a cool place. The professional cooperative accident prevention regulations and fire safety regulations must be strictly adhered to, as solutions are usually flammable and harmful to health. 5 Cleaning and maintenance 3.3 Humidity - It should be avoided that rubber and chewing products are stored in damp storage rooms. In particular, care must be taken that condensation can not occur in these rooms. The best relative humidity of 65% is recommended. 3.4 Light effect - Rubber and rubber products should be protected from direct sunlight and strong artificial light with a high ultraviolet proportion. Rubber products can be cleaned with warm water and soap and then dried at room temperature. If the products are stored for a prolonged period (6 to 8 months), cleaning with 1.5% sodium bicarbonate solution is possible. The remainder of the cleaning liquid must be rinsed with water. In no case you can solvents such as trychlorethylene, carbon tetrachloride, hydrocarbons, etc. and tools such as wire brushes or abrasive paper may be used for cleaning the products. 3.5 Oxygen and ozone - In particular, products with a large surface area in relation to the volume (rubberized or cellular articles) absolutely should be protected against air exchange (drafts). This can be done by wrapping the products or by storing them in airtight containers. 1.
