Accuracy: Tolerance/Error Limits In the European Measuring Instruments Directive, MID, the tolerance/ error limits must be kept within certain reference conditions. This includes the temperature and traction. If a traction measurement is necessary, it is indicated on the device. The reference temperature is 20 °C, unless otherwise stated. The tolerance/error limits apply to a reference temperature of 20 °C, unless otherwise stated. A measurement correction may be necessary for long tape measures and pocket tapes. Measurement corrections should be made when: • The ambient temperature greatly deviates from the reference temperature. • The linear expansion coefficient of the object being measured differs greatly from the tape. • A high measuring accuracy is required by the user. To calculate the length variation L: L = L x T x L = Length at the measuring point. T = Difference of the actual temperature at the time of measurement. = Linear expansion coefficient (usually printed on the end of the tape). At an ambient temperature of 30 °C, the deviation from the reference temperature is 10 °C. A 10 m tape measure therefore lengthens by 1.1 mm so that the measurement should be corrected by -1.1 mm.
