Shaft equipment – quality all the way down and all the way up. 1 Safe access 5 with the fall arrester system for double-stile ladders; single-stile ladders are also available for situations where space is limited. 2 facilitate installation. 6 Wide range of ladder materials: Steel, stainless steel or GRP. Safe entry into a shaft thanks to rotatable safety posts. 3 Wide variety of wall brackets 7 Great flexibility with twelve ladder lengths (from 4 to 15 rungs) and two ladder widths (300 or 400 mm) to choose from. Safety companion in the form of a safety slide mechanism. 8 4 Flush-fitting covers with cover plate or customisable surface. Available in three different materials (aluminium, steel and stainless steel) and a wide range of sizes. Reliable well covers available in many designs (round or rectangular, with or without vents) for securing drinking water supply. 08 Shaft depth D How many wall brackets are required? The maximum distance between wall brackets must be < 1.68 m, meaning p 2 sets are required for 4–9 rungs p 3 sets are required for 10–15 rungs p 5 sets are required for 16–24 rungs Ladder length L How long should the ladder be? p The length of the ladder depends on the shaft depth. As seen in the example on the right, the ladder should always be shorter than the shaft (e.g. shaft 2.50 m, ladder 2.24 m; shaft 2.00 m, ladder 1.68 m). p TAKE NOTE: When actual inside depth is > 5 m, an arrester rail must be included in the design. Ladder length L Shaft depth D Important information on the selection of material, ladder length and wall-mounting hardware When do I use which material? p Steel: most inexpensive choice; not suitable for exposure to aggressive substances, e. g. chlorine, sewage. p GRP: for use around electrical equipment (prevents sparking); some level of resistance (corrosion, acids, water). p Stainless steel: mandatory in drinking-water applications, sewage plants and places exposed to seawater (not suitable for permanent contact). How wide should a ladder be ideally? p It depends on the shaft's size – the wider the ladder, the more comfortable it is to use. What hardware is required for mounting a ladder? p Rigid wall brackets are used (for rectangular shafts) in 90% of the cases. Adjustable variants are used when there are bends in a shaft. p Floor mounting is not mandatory. 276
