CONTENTS Cutting Bond: can be adjusted from rigidly binding to elastic The key to a good bond lies in achieving a balance between grain fixation and flexibility. Depending on the bond, both rigid and aggressive or highly flexible abrasives for fine grinding can be manufactured. To do so, a range of synthetic resin bonds are used to anchor the abrasive grain on the substrate. Cleaning 2a Basic bond The basic bond is the first coat, which is used to anchor the grain to the backing and is typically made from synthetic resin. The abrasive grain is then applied evenly using a number of different coating methods, to achieve the desired grinding performance. Grinding 2b Top bond In a subsequent step, the top bond is applied and this ensures a stable bond between the individual abrasive grains. For one, the surface bond optimises grain wear and protects the grain against the forces occurring during the grinding process. This bond is also manufactured from synthetic resin. Coating type Coated abrasives are coated using a number of different coating densities. The coating type defines the abrasive grain distribution and their spacing from one another on the backing.
