GRINDING/POLISHING THE RIGHT COMBINATION 3 Coating type Coated abrasives Five factors are decisive for the optimum composition of a coated abrasive. Rhodius knows what matters: backing type, bond, grain, coating type and an active grinding coating – in the right combination, this creates the perfect tool that is precisely tailored to specific working requirements. 4 Abrasive grain 1 Substrate/ 5 Active grinding coating 2B Top bond 2A Basic bond backing type Backing type: an eye on the final application Different kinds of grinding work need different kinds of backing: its properties such as flexibility and tear strength are decisive for achieving optimal results. Most backings can be assigned to one of three categories: Paper and film Abrasives based on paper and film backings are primarily used for working on paints, lacquers and composite materials. The standard paper weight used for coated abrasives is specified using an international letter code system that ranges from A (70 g/m2) to G (400 g/m2), where the “A” weight is the most flexible, but also the one that wears out most quickly. Cloth (cotton, polyester and polycotton) Cloth backings are more durable and offer greater tear strength in comparison to paper, and can also be easily flexed and bent continuously multiple times as appropriate to the application. Coated abrasives on cloth are used on wood and especially in the field of metalworking. The common cloth weights are J, T, X, Y and Z, where the “J” weight is the most flexible. The further flexing of the cloth is indicated using a second letter “F” in the specification. Flexibility Vulcanised fibre Vulcanised fibre backings are manufactured from multiple layers of impregnated papers. They provide extremely high tear strength while also offering sufficient flexibility required for high-performance applications.
