Cutting Cable cutting techniques The first step in cable processing is to cut the cable to the required length. While diagonal cutting pliers are often the tool of choice, precision cable shears are also now increasingly used. And for good reason, since cable shears often several advantages in terms of the effort required as well as the quality of the cut. Diagonal pliers have a knife-and-anvil style jaw that bears down on the cable and needs a lot of force to use. Since the blades are straight and cut like a bird’s beak snapping shut, the cable can tend to slip out of the tool, which also reduces available leverage and means more force is required. The cut produced exhibits severe deformation of the individual conductors or wires that were cut through: in downstream processing steps like stripping or insertion into a contact, this can lead to errors and other problems. With RENNSTEIG cable shears, however, the cables are enclosed by concave-shaped blades that apply a sharp, shearing action to cut through cleanly and with little deformation. Since the conductor is trapped during the cutting process, this ensures it cannot slip out but is actually pulled closer to the pivot point. This improved lever action, coupled with blade sharpness, means the cut can be performed with much less expenditure of effort. This principle is used by RENNSTEIG cable cutting tools for a wide range of cable cross-sections. All of the blades used in our cable shears are precision-ground and hardened. This ensures professional results when cutting copper and aluminum conductors. Capacity figures refer to the sum total of all wires to be cut through. RENNSTEIG cable cutting tools are not suitable for use on cables with steel wires or steel armouring. For these use cases, ratcheting cable cutters with special reinforced blades can be found in the KNIPEX range of tools, for example. Shear cut Anvil cut Quality tools for cable assembly 8
