Processing contacts and connectors Crimping Crimped connections have now largely replaced soldered connections: they are mechanically stable, corrosion-resistant, easily reproducible, fatigue-resistant and ensure optimum electrical transfer quality over long periods of time. Creating them requires a coordinated set of conductors, contacts, crimping tools and tool settings. Basic quality requirements for crimp connections have been defined in several kinds of documents, such as DIN standards, AS standards for aviation, and aircraft manufacturer process instructions. In addition, detailed processing specifications from contact manufacturers also require the use of perfectly matched crimping solutions. From profiled crimping (F-, W-, hex-, square- or special crimp shapes), 4/8 indent crimps or multifunctional special crimping tools – RENNSTEIG offers a tool to match virtually any type of connector. Contacts that need to be processed as F-crimp profiles present a particular challenge when it comes to crimping. The symmetric rolling in of connector flanks has a decisive role to play here. In these cases, crimping tools with parallel closing jaws offer key advantages compared to tools using the more common shear principle (see fig.). This avoids the connector rotating during the crimping procedure and guarantees that the flanks are rolled in symmetrically. Precise preparation of the conductors (cutting and stripping) is equally important, as is ensuring well-matched connectors, conductors and crimping tools. An important role is also played by the correct positioning of connectors and conductors in the right crimping tool. The RENNSTEIG product portfolio offers a wide range of positioning guides: these guarantee high-quality processing as well as process reliability and error reduction. RENNSTEIG products naturally feature the full range of functionality for modern crimping tools, such as: – Forced locking system, to ensure that the crimp is completed properly – Secure, non-slip grip sheaths, plus ergonomic grip distances to reduce fatigue while working – Adjustable crimp pressure for interchangeable dies – Factory tool setting to ensure the correct initial crimp pressure Shear principle Parallel principle Quality tools for cable assembly 36
