ABCs of pump technology ABCs of pump technology ABCs of pump technology PROTECTION CLASS The IP protection class indicates the suitability of electrical equipment for various environmental conditions. The first digit indicates the level of protection against foreign bodies and contact, and the second digit against water. A pump with protection class IP54, for example, is fully protected against contact as well as against splashing water on all sides. Key terms, explained simply What is “legal calibratability“ and what does “viscosity”actually mean? Find out in our ABCs of pump technology! It answers frequently asked questions and explains common terms — do drop by, we look forward to seeing you there!” MAXIMUM SUCTION HEAD The maximum suction head specifies the maximum permissible height difference between the pump and the level of the liquid in the receptacle from which the pump is drawing the fluid. This value is to be taken into account for the positioning of the pump. SUCTION PORT The suction line or suction pipe is connected to the suction port of the pump. It is usually an imperial internal thread or hose nozzle. It is important to use the appropriate suction line, otherwise the pump will not supply the desired pump capacity. COMPRESSED AIR CONNECTION For pneumatically operated pumps, a connection to a compressed air supply is required. The size of the compressed air connection is usually specified in inches. Ensure correct dimensioning and sufficient air pressure so that the pump supplies the desired pump capacity. 54 PUMP CAPACITY The pump capacity of a pump describes the throughput in liters/minute. A maximum value is usually specified here, as the value actually achieved depends heavily on external influencing factors, such as the length and cross-section of the line, viscosity of the medium, and other variables. For hand pumps, the delivery rate is specified in liters per stroke. VISCOSITY Viscosity is a measure of how thick a fluid is. The higher the viscosity, the thicker the fluid (flows less); the lower the viscosity, the thinner it is (flows more). Because our oil pumps convey a wide range of different oils, the suitable viscosities are also indicated for the pump. LEGAL CALIBRATABILITY Legal calibration (Eichung) is a legally prescribed test of measures, weights, scales and measuring tools in accordance with the German Weights and Measures Act. A measuring instrument that is legally calibratable can be calibrated in accordance with the German Measurement and Calibration Act (MessEG) and provides legally reliable results for the duration of the respective calibration period (usually two years). TRANSMISSION RATIO The transmission ratio of an air pump indicates how the input pressure of the air supply is boosted to convey the fluid. For example, an input pressure of 6 bar for a pump with a transmission ratio of 3:1 results in a delivery pressure of approx. 18 bar. www.tecalemit.de/en 55
