TECHNICAL BASICS COLLECTIVE PROTECTION SYSTEM A collective protective protects several people at the same time. Users do not reach the edge, e.g. through a parapet ≥1 m, guardrails, side protection or scaffolding. The persons on the roof surface do not need special instruction with personal protective equipment against falls from a height (ppe) as they do not have to work with ppe and can move freely. This system is suitable for frequent roof inspections on installations that are regularly maintained. In addition, collective protection does not require annual inspection and is inconspicuous from the underside of the building and blends visually with the façade. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT AGAINST FALLS FROM A HEIGHT (PPE) Personal protective equipment against falls from a height is one of the personal protective measures. They protect people against a fall either by preventing a fall (restraint system), arresting a free fall (fall arrest system) or by positioning at the workplace (workplace positioning system). RESTRAINT SYSTEM Restraint systems restrict the user‘s range of movement to the extent that the edge of the fall cannot be reached, thus preventing a fall. RESTRAINT SYSTEM 1 = anchor point 2 = lanyard 3 = harness 22 FALL ARREST SYSTEMS Fall arrest systems catch users in a free fall, limiting the impact force acting on the body and the distance of the fall. ANCHOR POINT A connection between a structure and a safety system is called an anchor point. These are available with both rigid and movable anchor points. WORK POSITIONING SYSTEMS A work positioning system allows the user to lean or hang into the system so that a fall is avoided. Each work positioning system consists of a harness and a lanyard to attach to an anchor point. SYSTEM FOR ROPE ACCESS A rope access system allows the user to enter and exit the workstation using a work rope and a safety rope separately connected to anchorage points or anchorage systems in such a way that a free fall is prevented or arrested.
