INFORMATION ON SELECTING LADDERS Selecting ladder size/length 4 3 STOP STOP Leaning ladders may only be climbed up to the fourth step/rung from the top to ensure sufficient hold. 5 STOP Combination ladders in the ‘step ladder with extension ladder’ position may only be climbed up to the fifth step/rung from the top. The size of step ladders with platforms and platform ladders must be selected so that the user can reach the maximum required working height having to stretch outwards from the platform. Double-sided accessible step ladders may only be climbed up to the third step/rung from the top in order to provide sufficient hold. The ‘elbow method’ helps to determine the correct inclination angle. 2 4 1 1 Illustration of standing height, working height and reach height 1 Reach height 2 Working height Simplified HYMER formula: This can vary depending on the ladder or tower. Please observe the information in the technical tables in this catalogue. 3 3 3 Standing height 3 4 Tower height Working height = standing height + 1.50 m Reach height = standing height + 2.00 m Calculating ladder length The table shows the required minimum lengths. It is generally recommended to use the next longest ladder length in the HYMER range. Required minimum ladder length (in m) at the following angle of inclination 68° step ladders 75° rung ladders 70° rung ladders (still permitted) (our recommendation) (in m) vertical height × factor 1.035 vertical height × factor 1.064 vertical height × factor 1.080 2.00 2.05 2.15 2.15 2.50 2.60 2.65 2.70 3.00 3.10 3.20 3.25 vertical height 3.50 3.60 3.70 3.80 4.00 4.15 4.25 4.30 4.50 4.65 4.80 – 5.00 5.20 5.30 – 5.50 5.70 5.85 – 6.00 6.20 6.40 – 6.50 6.75 6.90 – 7.00 7.25 7.45 – 9 Example for calculating minimum ladder length: Vertical height (upper contact point) = 6.00 m When using a rung ladder (70° inclination angle): 6.00 m × 1.064 = 6.40 m 9
