Overview of the various charging cables from Mode 1 to Mode 4 Mode 1: Mode 1 charging technology, which is no longer widely used, involves plugging an electric vehicle into a standard household socket without any communication. The Mode 1 charging cable was part of the vehicle and permanently connected to it. Very often it was a spiral cable with a shock-proof plug. Mode 2: With Mode 2 charging, the communication unit, including the protection technology, is installed in the charging cable in an In-Cable Control Box (ICCB). This takes over the control function of the station when charging from CEE sockets or a conventional household socket. The charging current must usually be limited to prevent the socket from overheating. Mode 3: In most cases, electric cars and charging stations have a socket or plug based on the Type 2 standard. This can be locked electronically on the charging station-side and vehicle-side for protection against theft and for safety reasons (removing under load). This is the current standard mode (Mode 3), where the charging station and the electric vehicle communicate with each other via communication conductors. This allows the charging station, the charging cable and the vehicle to communicate with each other about the maximum possible charge and when the vehicle is ready for charging. Mode 4: The new Mode 4 DC fast charging is a technological advance. In Mode 4 charging, the electric vehicle must control the chargers (rectifiers) installed externally in the charging station according to demand and the condition of the battery. Charging outputs up to 350 kW can be achieved with the high-power chargers (HPC). Mode 4 charging cables are not available as accessories or spare parts, as they are permanently integrated into the charging station for safety reasons. 232
