P r o d u c t i nformati on rope s The right rope for every purpose The large number of different rope constructions, the various materials used to make ropes and compliance with international standards makes it difficult to determine which rope is best for a particular purpose. We have put information together below to help you find the ideal rope for your need from our broad-ranging portfolio. Twisted or braided ropes? Twisted ropes are used for many applications. In spite of several improvements from modern manufacturing methods, twisted ropes are inferior to braided ropes in certain fields of application. Thanks to simple spliceability, low costs and a non-slip, deep-grooved surface, twisted ropes will continue to have a safe market share in the future as well. Care should be taken in use to ensure the rope rotation in the construction is not lost. The rope must not wind up, but should remain closed. This is especially important in the case of chemical fibre ropes with very smooth surfaces made from, for example, polyester, polyamide or polypropylene. Braided ropes can have much more varied structures. From a triple braid through conventional eightfold braid to complicated kernmantel constructions of various materials, braided ropes can be constructed to suit the respective purpose optimally. Spliceability of the individual constructions also does not represent a problem here anymore today. Ropes of natural or synthetic fibres? Since the properties of natural fibres are natural, they are restricted in their possible uses. Due to an increase in environmental awareness among consumers, demand for natural fibres is growing. Synthetic fibres are usually far superior to natural fibres in practice and are being improved upon continuously. Their properties are so different that it is often difficult for consumers to make the right choice of material. Which synthetic fibres are suitable for which purposes? The following outline of the main properties of the most commonly used fibres should help you in your decision. Polyamide PA (brand names: Perlon, Nylon, Nylsuisse, Enkalon) combines high strength with high elongation, but swells a little in water and is not completely resistant to some acids and UV radiation. Polyester PES (brand names: Diolen, Trevira, Dacron, Tersuisse) has good strength, little elongation, is relatively heavy, but very resistant to weather influences and most chemicals. Polypropylene PP (brand names: Leolene, Softlene, etc.) is relatively inexpensive, very light and buoyant, but with low abrasion resistance and temperature stability. PP has very good chemical resistance. 14
