RCD ≈ Residual Current Device What are residual current devices used for? A residual current device provides protection against unacceptably high touch currents. They are designed to protect people from electrical accidents and also to prevent the risk of fire. How does an RCD work? An RCD disconnects the monitored circuit from the rest of the network when a certain residual current is exceeded. Residual currents occur, for example, when a fault current flows through the human body or via defective insulation. The RCD compares the level of the outgoing current with that of the returning current. In an intact system, the sum of all currents flowing through the RCD must be zero. If this is not the case, the RCD intervenes. What is the correct term for it? In the EU, the English term RCD (Residual Current Protective Device) is well established. In general German usage, the terms “FI-Schutzschalter” or “FI-Schalter” for short are also commonly used (F = fault, I = formula symbol for electric current). Is RCD protection mandatory? In Germany, an RCD with a rated residual current of max. 30 mA is mandatory for all circuits that have socket outlets and whose rated current does not exceed 16 A. On construction sites, additional protection must be provided for all socket circuits with a rated current of up to 32 A and on agricultural and horticultural premises, regardless of their rated current. What standards apply on construction sites? Electrical operating materials used on commercial construction sites is subject to the DIN VDE 0100 standard. The German Employer’s Liability Insurance Association for the Construction Industry (Berufsgenossenschaft BAU) has regulated in detail what operating materials must be protected in which way in order to ensure the highest possible protection for the user. Part 0100-704 specifies the “Requirements for special types of premises, rooms and installations - construction sites”. RCD types RCDs are differentiated in terms of their suitability for detecting different types of residual currents. Type A RCDs are residual current devices that are independent of mains voltage and only respond to sinusoidal AC residual currents and pulsating DC residual currents. They must not be connected upstream in circuits with electronic operating materials, as this may impair their function. Type B RCDs must be installed for this application, as they also protect against smooth DC fault currents or higher frequency harmonic currents.
